Others may also choose to specialize in specific rooms within buildings such as kitchens or bathrooms. Finally, there are those that specialize in a specific style of construction. For instance, they choose to specialize in modern designs or antique designs.

Interior design as a field has subspecialties. However, most designers tend to have a thorough knowledge in multiple fields, allowing them to traverse them. Such designers can work on any project and deliver quality service. Having knowledge in multiple fields allows one access to more contracts due to high demand. However, customers tend to look for people with specialty in a specific area when choosing.

Currently, in the United States, interior designers occupy 66, 500 jobs and above. Most of these occupations exist in specialized design services sectors. Architectural services, engineering, furniture stores, self-employment sector, and wholesale trade are also other employers. Those self-employed form the second greatest employer.

Most of the work is usually done in offices. Clients usually visit designers at their places of work to make inquiries and to hire their services. Previously, drawings used to be made on tables, but that has changed now. Today, complex software is used to make two- and three-dimensional images for use. Designers also visit design sites in the course of doing their job.
