Your toddler is growing fast, and with time will inevitably need to make a transition from his/her cot or crib into a bed. When this time comes, you need to think outside the box, to make the transition easy, and the baby cooperative. A car bed is the best gift you can give to your toddler. Here are a few ideas on how to make a car bed for your toddler.
The first thing you need to do is to make a plan, and decide on what kind of car design you want for your kid. The color of the car can come later when you have chosen the design and type of car you will be basing your bed on. A popular design to choose could be a Porsche, or Ferrari, but a Zonda or Lamborghini, and any car of your choice can do.
After you have found your car, you need to draw the outline of the car on the material you are going to use. The best place to do this is on one piece of your Medium density fiberboard on which you want to make the bed. Use the first piece to curve out the design on the other piece of the MDF.
On the work bench, lay your template and use clamps or vice grips to secure it. To refine the shaped areas of your car, use the jigsaw blade and the circular saw to smoothen any straight edges. Make sure you do not go out of the pencil lines, and maintain the jigsaw blade perpendicular. After you are done with the first piece, use it as a template to cut out the other piece to make them identical.
If your car has a slanted front like most cars, cut out an MDF piece to fill in the thickness of the mattress, and allow the bed to move well. You can use swivel as they can allow you to open the front when you need to make the bed. In order to ensure that your toddler does not bang his/her head on any pointing pieces, observe the same criteria.
Screw and glue the four major pieces together once you are done cutting them. Drill some pilot holes to accommodate the screws. Ensure that the front and head board of your car are attached to the outside edges of the long pieces for extra stability.
Now that you have assembled your bed, the next step is to paint with the color of your choice. For the priming and painting of the MDF, make sure that your working area is well ventilated. For the undercoat of the inside and outside of the car, spray evenly, covering the entire piece. Allow the primer to dry, about two hours before spray painting the bed.
To get the complete authentic look, you should add the decals onto the car. You can then use sticker kits that look like wheels, if there is room in the design. Headlight and bumpers stickers can also be quite useful. When you are done you can now transfer the bed to the room where it should be and place the mattress on.
