What would you think if I told you that children as young as 9 years old can learn how to draw realistic portraits of people? Impossible? You may not due to age, not fully graduated from drawing animated characters, and the use of colored markers and construction paper. Yes, your child can learn to draw realistic portraits using people (five tones of the shadows, a black and white photograph of high quality 8 "x 10" plastic grid sheet acetate gridded 8 "x 10" drawing paper, and 1/2 "square of cardboard viewfinder). using these basic drawing techniques and drawing materials your child will be able to draw a realistic portrait of two hours without previous drawing class instructor, or never collect a pencil sketch and drawing paper.
Still confused? I was and am still confused today. I was a freelance art teacher who teaches the art and craft of Michael, located in Waldorf, MD on Saturday. I noticed in my area the lack of art classes for children (5-12). Most art teachers taught art in individuals ages 13 to adult. But you know who wanted to teach younger children, or that it was difficult to find a nearby art teacher would have the patience to teach young children because their attention span.
I said to myself. If a child can learn to draw animals, landscapes and animated characters using basic shapes such as (circle, line, angle, bend, and place). They can apply these shapes to draw a realistic portrait of a person. I started reading articles on the Internet and other reference materials on how children learn to read, write and draw. Then I joined my research over a six-week portrait drawing workshop for children (9-12).
I found out when a child learns to read, write and draw, everything is upside down, or right to left. In other words, read from right to left instead of left to right. Instead of pulling in the right direction in adulthood. A child will turn their photo upside down to draw, as they are looking in a mirror where everything is upside down. So I came up with a fun and creative workshop portrait drawing so by combining 10 sets of children, 5 holes 15 minutes time drawing, drawing grid lines, light and shadow or toning, upside down reverse drawing, etc.. I had to think like a child, and reverse the way I learned to draw the way a child learns to draw.
For example, the fourth week of the course, students were ready for the time of year. You say that exercises time sounding as if in military school. Not quite, exercises time allows the student to focus on the forms, expression and subject movement without using shading. The basics of this technique is to remind students to draw the object as they see it, without stopping. Students received a cartoon character drawn in five minutes, or as Mickey Mouse cartoon character. I told them not to rush because five minutes is a long time. Some students have completed the character outline in less than three minutes. If you finish before the five minutes passed, could return for two more minutes to correct their mistakes and erase unnecessary lines. Students would do this exercise by alternating between time (five to fifteen minutes of exercise) sketch drawings of six or more.
Another great exercise is to reverse drawing. Students received "x 10" 8 black and white plastic acetate "x 10" graph paper graph paper, and 8. Students were invited to put the image upside down, place the plastic grid ethyl on leaf photo. What you see now is the photo divided into (8) places (horizontal) and (10) places (vertical). The number of places on the grid acetate sheet must be the same number of squares on graph paper. Instead of focusing on the picture students now focus on the shapes and colors of the object in each square. The purpose of this exercise is for students to draw and shade in the shapes exactly how they look in each square. In other words, as the game of connecting cables or connection points. After completing the exercise, you now have a portrait of a person with the proper placement of the eyes, ears, nose, mouth and no time to make corrections spending. All portraits corrections can now be concluded by turning the right side of the paper and erase unnecessary lines and heavy shading.
You may think you need years of experience drawing to draw a realistic portrait. However, I have found that it is false. I taught students who have no experience in drawing, and others with some years of experience in drawing. Anyone with the desire can learn to draw. The three key points to consider are:
1) Patience - Go at your own pace. Do not compare yourself with other artists, or are you frustrated and want to quit.
2) Technical & Style - Everyone has their own unique style. Choose a drawing or painting medium you feel comfortable. For example, if you use oil paint, but uncomfortable to explore watercolors. Stick to oil painting.
3) Practice - I always tell my students. Practice makes perfect. Then practice again and again.
