Pencil Drawings - Where To Start?

These pencil drawings have no set category or theme for where they belong, so altogether they make up a nice jumbled assortment.

Is there a tiny part of you that says "I'd really love to know how to draw"? Well, I am here to show you that it is very achievable and there is no time like the present!
Just follow along with me and copy these basic images. If you enjoy copying, then you are in for a great time.

Where To Start?

  If you are teaching yourself to draw, I recommend starting with graphite because it is a forgiving medium. If you make a mistake, there is no drama, simply erase the mistake and continue on.

I always use either a mechanical or "B" grade pencils. My sister gave me a lovely "B" sketching set and I use it nearly everyday.

Select your preferred topic or subject and then find something with lots of white space in and around it.
I started off drawing cartoon animals and other characters because I found that was the best subject for me to tackle. I was inspired to do more once I saw that I managed to get a good likeness.
The majority of pencil drawings represented on this site are the ones I did when I was learning.

When you think about it, the more you practice writing, the neater it becomes -- and it is exactly the same with drawing.
I will always remind you to keep on putting the date on your drawings because I think it is an important part of your training.
You will feel very proud of yourself when you look back at the drawings you did at the start and how they look now. Of course, that comparison won't mean as much if you forget to note the dates :(

One of my favorite drawing books is called Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards.
Make sure you read it a couple times over the course of a year or 2, because it is amazing how much difference it makes when you re-read the book. Somehow, things just make more sense and it is very helpful advice.

You can find heaps of simple pencil drawings here that provide a great resource if you are teaching yourself how to draw.
I hope to encourage you to explore art by starting with the simplest medium of pencil.
If you are looking for a new hobby and art is not a consideration due to lack of inborn talent, well, that is a real shame because it is very possible to teach yourself to draw.
You really must give drawing a try otherwise you will miss out on one of the best forms of entertainment!

•   the time to practice
•   a dose of persistence
•   the faith that you can do it

Confused About Where To Start?

I didn't have a single clue where to begin but I did know that I wanted to do it my way - without being judged or left feeling incompetent. Is that how you feel, too?
 
All I did was start drawing things that I thought I could successfully copy without becoming discouraged.
If you choose really simple topics, that gives you the impetus to keep going.
Don't be afraid to copy, that's what art is! It's all copied, whether it be from existing artwork or real life, we just use our own interpretation on how we see things.
The trick is to portray in what you see, not what you know.
There are many successful self-taught artists around and it's not too late for you to be one. Don't delay, now is a really good time to start.
Remember that everything you do must make you happy otherwise there's no point in doing it. So, if you illustrate things that appeal to you, you will enjoy the process so much more.
Put the current date on your work so you can see how much improvement you have made over a period of time. The self-satisfaction you get from that is more encouragement to continue.

Pencil portrait wins Texaco art prize for Mayo teenager

Sixteen-Year-Old Artist Wins National Art Competition with Masterful Hyper-Realistic Pencil Portrait

For the past four years, 16-year-old artist Shania McDonagh has participated in the Texaco Children’s Art Competition, an art contest for children in Ireland held every year since 1955. Just looking at the astounding portrait above, it may come as no surprise that McDonagh has won the top prize for her age category every year since she was 12, and today snagged the top prize for the 2014 competition with this hyperrealistic drawing of a man titled Coleman.

The judging panel chairman, Declan McGonagle, director of the National College of Art & Design, remarked that the girl’s work could position her “as one of the most talented artists of her generation, and one whose skill could see her become one of Ireland’s foremost portrait artists of the future.” We would be inclined to agree.

For her talent McDonagh snagged a $2,075 (€1,500) award which she will receive next month. You can read more and catch a video over at  The Irish Times
